Depression Era Cooking

I've become obsessed recently with Depression Era Recipes. I find it fascinating- these are folks who took little to nothing and made meals that kept their families going during the extremely hard times. I've read stories of a woman taking 2 pork chops and through a little of this and that stretching them to feed a family of 6- and not only feeding them, filling them all up!

So, expect to see some of those coming :). As always, they can be made with store bought ingredients, or from your garden- or even from ham stock/chicken stock, etc that you've made yourself in the past. These recipes are usually for large amounts and definitely lend themselves to being frozen or eaten for several meals.

As always, if you have any great recipes that you'd like to see posted here, email me! I prefer the cheap ones, in some of my quests I've found "budget" recipes that call for ingredients like lobster- for me, $13 a pound isn't cheap :).

  1. I ran a search and found the recipe I think you mention with the 2 pork chops feeding a family of 6. Since I have a family of 6 and have to budget carefully, I'll be altering the recipe slightly (don't always have potatoes to hand) and giving it a try today!
